Ireland/London Writing and the Arts Conference (Hammersmith Irish Centre, 23rd February 2013)
What happens in the intersection between cultures? This conference explores the myriad intersections between Ireland and Britain in one particular location, London. Cosmopolitan capital and circuit-board of cultural connection, how has London’s writing and arts culture been shaped by its intersection with generations of Irish creative migrants? How is such cultural activity organized and what forms does it take? How has London featured in the cultural history of Ireland? How has the nature and significance of this cultural traffic been transformed in recent decades?
Irish Music and Our London Location
Tomorrow I will present the following paper entitled: "Irish Traditional Music In London - Space, Timing and the Gig".
This paper will explore Irish traditional music making in London. By looking at common aspects of performance within differing contexts, it will ask questions as to how we perceive ourselves as performers and how the listener becomes involved with the culture presented. What does it mean to be a musician on the Irish music circuit in London? How do prepared arrangements create perceptions and influence performances of traditional music?
