FAQ
Here’s a list of some of our most frequently asked questions.
Q: Who created this website?
A: A group of former Ethnomusicology students.
Q: Why was it created?
A: We want to bring Ethnomusicology out of the university libraries and out of academic journals because we felt that Ethnomusicology can sometimes be a very closed discipline, which does not make itself accessible to everyone. We also want the people whose music we’ve studied to be able to read the things we’ve written about them and we want students to be able to communicate with each other and read each other’s research. We also thought it was the kind of resource we could have used while we were students.
Q: Do you prefer Ethno-musicology or Ethnomusicology?
A: We will not honor that question with an answer.
Q: Should I donate to this project?
A: No, we want this to be a free website and available for anyone to use. But you can if you really want to.
Q: Why do I have to become a member?
A: You don’t have to become a member to look at the articles. We created the membership system to try to foster a sense of on-line community, so that the website didn’t feel so anonymous. Members can submit articles, talk to one another, comment on articles, and use the forum. Plus, membership is free.
Q: I’m not really an Ethnomusicologist, why should I look at your website?
A: We want this website to be for anyone who is interested in music, music history, music theory, etc. We want this website to reach beyond the discipline of ethnomusicology.
Q: Who do these articles belong to?
A: They are not the property of Outreach Ethnomusicology; they belong to the people who wrote them.
Q: Can I reference these articles for my school paper?
A: Yes, but please credit the author of the article. Also, while all the articles on this website are credible and of high quality, please be aware that this is mostly unpublished, non-peer reviewed research.
Q: I disagree with something I read here.
A: Please politely bring it up with the author of the article by commenting on the article itself. We encourage healthy debate, but be nice we don’t like flame wars.
Q: Can I submit something which I wrote for school?
A: Yes.
