The Soul of Mbira

Studying fieldwork practices of a professional ethnomusicologist who worked with the Shona people in Zimbabwe. This presentation was completed during my academic training in the analysis of fieldwork practices.

The Soul of Mbira is a book detailing music and traditions of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. It was written by renowned ethnomusicologist, Paul Berliner.

In order to present my analysis of this work, I used powerpoint, explaining my findings regarding this example of a more traditional approach of fieldwork. This research was also used to inform my own interviewing practices and provide insights into the techniques of documenting cultural complexities. Other areas explored were: ways in which the author describes the origins of the instrument, mass communications and urbanisation in Zimbabwe.
